The Five Seasons Fertility Method

A Root-Cause Approach to Fertility Care

The Five Seasons Fertility Method

We’ve seen how trying to conceive can quickly become all-consuming.

What often begins as excitement can gradually turn into a full-time job: cycle tracking apps, ovulation strips, supplements, fertility podcasts, specialist appointments, blood draws, and endless internet searches. Many women come to us after months, or even years, of doing everything they’ve been told should work, only to hear some version of the same frustrating message: “Everything looks normal.“

Others find themselves quickly ushered toward increasingly aggressive fertility treatments without ever feeling like they truly understand why conception has been difficult in the first place.

And still others are in the midst of assisted reproductive therapies but feel lost and confused.

Five Seasons Healing was built around a different philosophy: fertility doesn’t have to be approached as a race toward intervention, but rather as a careful investigation into the underlying factors affecting reproductive health with full support along the way.

Rethinking Fertility Care

Rethinking Fertility Care

The Five Seasons Fertility Method is a comprehensive fertility framework rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine that helps identify underlying imbalances, regulate the menstrual cycle, optimize reproductive health, and integrate medical intervention strategically when needed.

Rather than focusing solely on hormone numbers or fertility timelines, we understand that fertility is shaped by the coordination of multiple interconnected systems throughout the body that directly affect hormonal health. Circulation, digestion, immune health, sleep quality, nervous system regulation, stress resilience, and emotional well-being all play meaningful roles in reproductive function.

In our clinic, we see how the body gives subtle signals long before major dysfunction appears. Symptoms that are often normalized—painful periods, PMS, fatigue, spotting, clotting, irregular cycles, digestive issues, poor sleep, or chronic stress—can all provide meaningful information about reproductive health.

This is why we do not believe in one-size-fits-all fertility protocols.

Our approach to acupuncture for fertility is highly individualized and designed to work in relationship with how you actually live: your routines, stressors, constitution, medical history, and reproductive goals. In our experience, optimizing overall health first can improve fertility outcomes while also clarifying whether more advanced intervention is truly needed.

The Five Seasons Fertility Method

Once we understand the full fertility picture we can begin building a treatment strategy that is both precise and individualized.

Our five-pillar framework helps patients strengthen fertility, regulate their cycles, optimize reproductive health, and integrate medical care thoughtfully when needed.

1. Pinpoint the Fertility Pattern

A skilled clinician is first and foremost a skilled diagnostician. We believe fertility technology should follow diagnosis, not the other way around.

At Five Seasons Healing, fertility care never begins with a generic protocol or assumptions based solely on age or lab values. We begin by understanding the unique story your body is telling through your cycle, symptoms, fertility history, medical history, lab work, and overall constitution.

When the diagnosis is clear, treatment becomes more precise, intentional, and effective.

2. Nourish the Foundation

Healthy fertility requires healthy raw materials.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, reproductive vitality depends heavily on the quality of Blood (Xue), Essence (Jing), and the smooth circulation of vital energy, (Qi). These concepts are foundational to building uterine lining, supporting healthy ovulation, nourishing reproductive organs, and maintaining overall vitality.

A useful metaphor is that of improving the soil when planting seeds.

Even the healthiest seeds struggle in depleted soil. Although modern fertility care may increase opportunities or improve timing, it does not necessarily improve the quality of the reproductive terrain.

3. Regulate the Cycle

A regulated cycle is one of the clearest signs of healthy fertility.

Here, we are looking at each phase of the menstrual cycle very closely. Treatment focuses on improving cycle regularity, ovulation timing, PMS, menstrual flow, inflammation, emotional regulation, and luteal phase adequacy.

Patients often begin noticing important improvements before pregnancy occurs, including more predictable cycles, healthier cervical fluid, reduced cramping, fewer clots, less PMS, improved sleep, and more stable energy.

Even if conception has not yet occurred, these changes tell us the body is becoming more balanced.

4. Enhance Fertility Potential

Once foundational health is strengthened and the cycle becomes more regulated, fertility can be optimized even further.

This is where we move beyond simply correcting imbalances. Now, we can begin to support the body to reach its highest level of reproductive function. Our goal is to help patients cultivate greater vitality, resilience, and refinement of their fertility potential.

During this phase, we focus on improving egg quality, enhancing the critical 90-day preconception window, strengthening immune resilience, supporting the nervous system, and refining individual lifestyle factors that influence reproductive health.

Fertility optimization is not limited to the intended mother. When applicable, we also assess male-factor fertility by reviewing semen analysis results, medical history, and lifestyle factors that may affect reproductive health. New sperm is produced every 72 days, and we work to optimize this process. This helps ensure that opportunities for improvement are identified for both partners.

5. Integrate Strategically

Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine are powerful standalone tools for improving reproductive health. However, treatment can also be enhanced by additional medical evaluations, specialized therapies, or collaborative care depending on one’s diagnosis, timeline, and goals.

At Five Seasons Healing, part of our role is helping patients understand what type of support is most appropriate and when. This may include cases involving fibroids, endometriosis, PCOS, absent periods, recurrent pregnancy loss, severe menstrual pain, or age-related fertility concerns.

For some, this may mean continuing to optimize naturally through acupuncture, herbal medicine, nutrition, and lifestyle changes. For others, it may include referral for additional lab work, imaging, reproductive endocrinology consultation, or surgical evaluation. This may also involve collaboration with mental health professionals, pelvic floor specialists, nutritionists, or other trusted providers who can help support different aspects of the fertility journey.

When IVF or other assisted reproductive treatments are appropriate, we frequently provide acupuncture before and during treatment cycles, as well as coaching throughout what can often feel like a highly clinical and emotionally demanding process.

Our goal is to be a support and guide to our fertility patients so they can feel informed, calm and cared for during their fertility journey.

Common Questions

Hormone labs are an important part of fertility care and can offer valuable insight into ovarian reserve, ovulation, thyroid function, and hormonal balance. At Five Seasons Healing, we routinely review markers such as AMH, FSH, progesterone, estradiol, thyroid function, prolactin, and other relevant labs as part of a broader fertility picture.

But lab work is only one piece of the puzzle. Labs offer a snapshot of hormone values at a moment in time. What they often do not fully capture is how those values are interacting with the body as a living, dynamic system.

For example, lab values may not clearly reveal issues related to circulation, blood quality, inflammatory burden, constitutional weakness, nervous system dysregulation, internal cold or heat patterns, dryness, immune imbalance, or poor digestion and nutrient absorption—all of which may influence fertility.

This is often why patients come to us feeling confused. Their lab work appears normal, but their lived experience tells a different story. They may be struggling with painful periods, severe PMS, irregular cycles, spotting, clotting, poor cervical fluid production, fatigue, or short luteal phases despite being told that everything looks fine.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, these signs are not viewed as random, unrelated nor unimportant. Rather than asking whether a patient fits a diagnosis, we look for patterns that explain why the body may be struggling to conceive.

This is why Sharon often says:

“Unexplained infertility doesn’t exist in Traditional Chinese Medicine.”

Fertility hormones are not fixed. Many patients arrive feeling discouraged by low AMH, elevated FSH, or other lab findings, assuming these numbers define their reproductive future.

While these markers provide important information, they do not tell us what is possible moving forward. Fertility physiology is dynamic and when underlying imbalances are addressed, we often see meaningful improvements in symptoms, cycle quality, hormone labs and overall reproductive health over time.

Many fertility conversations revolve around one question: Did you ovulate?

While ovulation is certainly important, fertility is not a one-day event.

A healthy menstrual cycle reflects the coordination of many systems working together over the course of an entire month. This is why we view the menstrual cycle as one of the body’s most valuable diagnostic tools.

Your menstrual cycle is a monthly report card of reproductive health.

At Five Seasons Healing, we assess each phase of the cycle carefully.

During the follicular phase, we evaluate cycle length, blood building, egg development, and how the body is preparing for ovulation.

During ovulation, we assess timing, cervical mucus quality, ovulatory symptoms, and basal body temperature shifts.

The luteal phase gives us valuable information about progesterone support, implantation readiness, and whether the body is maintaining an adequate implantation window.

Finally, the menstrual phase reveals critical information through blood quality, flow, clotting, pain, cramping, PMS, and the overall menstrual experience.

A healthy cycle is typically predictable, with ovulation occurring around mid-cycle, healthy cervical mucus, minimal PMS, painless menstruation, and blood flow that is neither excessively heavy nor overly scant.

When any phase is disrupted, the cycle gives us clues.

This allows us to go far beyond “Did you ovulate?” and ask the more important question: How well is your reproductive system functioning as a whole?

Why TCM Shouldn't Be a Last Resort

Many patients seek acupuncture for fertility only after feeling exhausted by conventional options or after being told they have “unexplained infertility”. We believe Traditional Chinese Medicine is often most impactful when introduced earlier in the fertility journey.

TCM is not simply supportive care. It is a sophisticated diagnostic and treatment system that can improve fertility health proactively, strategically, and often in ways that complement both natural conception and modern fertility medicine.

For patients pursuing IVF, this preparatory phase can be especially valuable.

Improving cycle quality, supporting nervous system regulation, reducing physiological stress, and strengthening overall reproductive health before treatment may help create a more receptive environment for ovarian stimulation, implantation, and pregnancy support. In this way, TCM can work synergistically with assisted reproductive technologies rather than being viewed as an afterthought.
