Traditional Chinese Medicine
Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is a 3000 year old medical system with a sophisticated clinical and written history. The cornerstone of traditional Chinese medicine is the recognition that our health is not simply freedom from disease, but rather that health is maintaining balance within ourselves and creating an equilibrium with the environment around us. This internal and external harmony helps us lead healthier, happier and longer lives. Because Chinese medicine views a person as a whole being, any disharmony in one area—be it body, mind, or spirit—can throw off the balance of the entire system.
Health and wellbeing are dependent on the smooth and unhindered flow of qi.
Chinese medicine treats the whole person-body, mind, and spirit. Its diagnostic and therapeutic strengths lie in its ability to identify and treat both the source of the illness as well as the presenting symptoms. In this it differs from Western medicine which often tends to focus on symptomatic relief. In Chinese medical diagnosis, the pattern of imbalance is first identified and then addressed using a combination of therapies, which may include
- Acupuncture
- Herbal medicine
- Massage
- Qi Gong
- Nutrition
- Lifestyle modifications
Through treatment, these imbalances are re-patterned, the internal environment is changed, and equilibrium is restored.
The physical, psychological and emotional disharmonies that lead to discomfort and disease may be the result of
- environmental factors such as climate, pollutants, urban living, contagious diseases, injury or external stressors,
- internal imbalances from our emotions, thoughts, and genetic makeup or
- lifestyle imbalances from overwork, improper diet, poor posture, and poor sleep.
By identifying the root cause of the illness, informed and effective action can be taken to treat the condition and prevent reoccurrence.
